Yordan Dabady (1962-Present) was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where he was immersed in a vibrant cultural landscape that would profoundly influence his artistic journey.
At the young age of eleven in 1973, Yordan embarked on his professional education, studying painting and ceramics at the Salesians Brothers School. There, he had the privilege of studying under the tutelage of renowned artists Fritzner Mervil and Dieudonne Cedor. This foundational period was crucial in shaping his artistic skills and vision. In 1975, Dabady received a certificate in painting, certifying his proficiency in using any medium—a testament to his versatility and dedication.
Dabady’s first professional experience was at the deVendegies ceramics workshop, where he worked for six transformative years (1982-1988). During this time, he honed his craft, eventually rising to the position of Chief Decorator. His role at the workshop not only refined his technical skills but also enriched his understanding of artistic design and aesthetics. In 1988, feeling the urge to pursue his own artistic voice, he left the workshop to fully embrace his career as an independent artist.
The early works of Yordan Dabady, characterized by the Gingerbread House style, quickly garnered attention. These works were a visual celebration of Haitian architecture and culture, presented with intricate detail and vibrant color palettes. He showcased these pieces in some of the most esteemed local galleries, including Monnin, Marassa, Nader, Touche d’Art, Festival Art, and Galata. Each exhibition helped establish his reputation as a skilled and innovative artist.
In 1990, Yordan participated in a prestigious painting competition organized by the French Institute of Haiti. Competing against twenty-five young artists, he won sixth prize, a significant achievement that marked a pivotal moment in his career. This recognition opened doors to further opportunities, leading to numerous individual and group exhibitions over the years.
Dabady’s work has been featured in various exhibitions both in Haiti and internationally.
